I planted these for my kid.

So this seems to be the norm with my sunflowers

And what causes this?

This little Asshole.

Strauzia longipennis (Sunflower Maggot Fly)

Is there a way to kill? Not that I have found. They live in the soil, climb through the damn stalk! Argh

As Forrest Gump would say:
Shit Happens
Don't let it get to ya, plant some more. Plant enough for you and the insects.

That is sad. I have never had good luck with sun flowers but usually squirrels are the culprit.

FLWasteland: I didn't know squirrels would harm a sunflower. You must be talking about them trying to get to the seeds? From what I have read, pulling seeds out of a sunflower isn't so easy.
