John Steinbeck's America and Americans
"We proudly insist that we base our political positions on the issues-and we will vote against a man because of his religion, his name, or the shape of his nose. (pg. 34)"
"We are able to believe that our government is weak, stupid, overbearing, dishonest, and inefficient, and at the same time we are deeply convinced that it is the best government in the world, and we would like to impose it upon everyone else. We speak of the American Way of Life as though it involved the ground rules for the governance of heaven. (pg. 32)"
"The Indians survived our open intention of wiping them out, and since the tide turned they have weathered our good intentions toward them, which can be much more deadly. (pg. 19)"
You can see I haven't gotten very far in the book but man can that sonvabitch write. This has to be one of, if not, the best book I have ever read and I am not even done.
